WP2: Statistics

Task 2.1: Statistics - Inception Report

Task 2.2: Statistics - Establishment of an European inventory

Task 2.3: Statistics - Production of Origin-Destination Matrices

Task 2.4: Statistics - Final Report

The objectives for the statistics investigation are:

  • To identify, to collect, and to make available reliable trade and transport statistics that fit current and future market requirements and the needs of policy makers.
  • To establish a methodology that can be widely used to extract door-to-door intermodal data from existing, available statistical sources (this will involve a follow-up of the methodology created under the CA SSS Statistics Working Group).
  • To establish a matrix allowing a practicable and easy conversion of available tonne-based data into tonne-kilometres in SSS. It should be a computerised, updateable tool allowing conversion of country-to-country, port and maritime region tonnes into tonne kilometres. Further work will be done to achieve as far as possible port-to-port and port-to-coastal area statistics (This activity will be carried on through co-ordinatated work with EUROSTAT).
  • To obtain statistical information on the evolution of short-sea feeder traffic (tonnes + tkm) and trends in the carriage of containers.

Contacts with EUROSTAT have been set up to ensure efficient co-operation between REALISE and the work carried on by EUROSTAT. This cooperation will also be important to avoid duplication of work and overlapping.

The co-ordination between the work to be carried out by the REALISE WP2 contractors and with that of EUROSTAT will explore the possibility of improving and developing the New Cronos database.
